Tesla (TSLA) Doubled Since 2017 Despite Warnings. This Time Is No Different
- Tesla stock fell 3.6% on the day due to slightly lower deliveries projections.
- The gigafactory’s progress has surpassed most expectations and can counter a potential minor sales drop.
- Analysts have rated Tesla stock as underperform for two years.
Analysts were quick to categorize Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) stock as “underperform” on Dec. 30, citing slightly lower sales that are below expectations. But, the car maker has been described as an overvalued stock since 2017, and it has doubled in the past two years.
Off of bearish projections, Tesla stock dropped by nearly 4% on the day, closing at $414.
Are investors already forgetting Tesla Gigafactory in China?
According to Cowen’s Jeffrey Osborne, Tesla is set to deliver 356,000 vehicles by the end of 2019. That is 4,000 fewer vehicles from projections of 360,000 vehicle deliveries.
The reaction of investors to a 4,000 deliveries miss is exaggerated to say the least. Throughout the year, the car maker has maintained absolute dominance over the U.S. and European electric car market.
And, with the opening of the Shanghai Gigafactory, Tesla looks to target the Chinese market by as early as the first half of 2020.
As said by The Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel, many large conglomerates have spent more than two years to build a large-scale factory, never mind start production in it. Patel said:
Tesla built a whole-ass car factory that’s shipping Model 3s in 357 days. For comparison, Foxconn has been digging holes in Wisconsin for 2.5 years and has only delivered confusion.
Tesla built an entire car manufacturing factory within 12 months and has already started producing Model 3s. It is discussing with local suppliers to potentially lower costs of production to further decrease the price point of Tesla vehicles in China.
Keep in mind, Tesla already obtained a tax exemption in China and government subsidies allow up to $3,600 in discount per vehicle.
Sell ratings since late 2017
Many analysts, including Osborne, maintained a sell rating or an underperform category for Tesla since late 2017.
MarketWatch reports that Osborne has kept an underperform rating for Tesla since at least August 2017. The stock price of TSLA has more than doubled since.
A large part of the recent Tesla stock pullback, while most of it has to do with the expected delivery miss, has likely to do with the stock being overbought in the past four weeks.
Options trader Tom White said the Relative Strength Index (RSI) of the TSLA stock, a technical indicator that determines whether an asset is overbought or oversold, shows the stock is still hovering above overbought levels. He said:
Tesla cracking today after great run with support now at $410 area. RSI finally breaking down but still above overbought 70 level after getting stretched to 85 last week. Is it a ‘Buy the Dip’ session for short term or wait for better levels?
It is a possibility that rather than a minor delivery miss, the market’s reaction on Monday was caused by something else completely. Tesla stock experienced a parabolic rally in the month of December without minor pullbacks to stabilize the stock’s short-term trend.
