This Gamer’s Massive Minecraft City Build is an Incredible 5-Year Effort

  • One gamer created a big map over five years with skyscrapers, highways, and railways on Minecraft.
  • Upon the release of RTX by Microsoft and Nvidia, the game will become even more realistic.
  • It will establish a better environment for gamers on Minecraft, as it faces completion from Roblox.

On the Gaming Subreddit (/r/gaming), one gamer that goes with the username “hauloff” shared a Minecraft build that was built over the span of five years. Within six hours, the post received nearly 18,000 thumbs up on Reddit.

The gamer said:

Spent the past five years slowly building my Minecraft city organically. Redeveloped smaller buildings into larger ones in a free-form manner like real cities do. Also complete with highways, rails, and civic buildings. Thought you guys would enjoy.

Big builds are quite common on Minecraft but the intricate details of the in-game mega-city shows a glimpse into how Minecraft can continue to evolve.

Minecraft has evolved, but it will become even more realistic

A large part of the entertainment aspect of Minecraft is to create unique maps or builds and share them with the community.

Over time, users have become increasingly creative on how architecture ranging from skyscrapers to public buildings can be structured. Newly implemented details have made Minecraft more realistic in recent years with the introduction of more features and performance updates.

In the imminent future, it will be possible to create megacities like the one built by u/hauloff with significantly higher accuracy regarding technical and visual details.

While the date of its public release has not been announced yet, Nvidia and Microsoft have been working on an update to implement ray tracing.

With a higher performance graphic card, on RTX-enabled Minecraft, users are able to build maps with unprecedented details.

Path tracing, which is a type of ray tracing, improves “almost every pixel of every scene” of the game, making it much more realistic.

Potentially by 2020, users will be able to create maps with waters that show reflections, overall better lightning, and more sophisticated aesthetics.

Minecraft Franchise Creative Director Saxs Persson said:

RTX gives the Minecraft world a brand-new feel to it. In normal Minecraft, a block of gold just appears yellow, but with ray tracing turned on, you really get to see the specular highlight, you get to see the reflection, you can even see a mob reflected in it.

For instance, in the case of u/hauloff—an architecture and urban planning student who used technical knowledge to create an advanced Minecraft city—said that the build has important details like highly elevated high ways to “minimize street disruption” that are not obvious at first glance.

Upcoming updates and releases like RTX would establish a better environment for Minecraft gamers, especially in building complex objects and maps.

Still growing

The most recent report about the user base of Minecraft show that the popular game has over 112 million active monthly players. That is an increase of more than 22 million since October 2018.

The game has consistently been popular on gaming streaming and video sharing platforms like Twitch and YouTube. And, in recent months, the world’s most well-known gamers in the likes of PewDiePie have started to actively create content about Minecraft.
