Avowed Could Dwarf Skyrim in Size – And Bethesda Should Be Worried

  • A new leak suggests that Obsidian Entertainment fantasy RPG ‘Avowed’ will be much bigger than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
  • The information is ironic as Obsidian and The Elder Scrolls owner Bethesda have a fractured relationship.
  • The two companies worked together on Fallout: New Vegas but famously fell out over that game’s review scores.

One of the more positive surprises from the Xbox Games Showcase was the reveal of Obsidian Entertainment’s new RPG, Avowed. In an event full of known quantities, like Halo Infinite and a new Forza Motorsport, Avowed wasn’t something most fans were expecting.

Avowed Could Be Bigger Than Skyrim

While the trailer was sprinkled with clues but little confirmed information, a new leak has shed more light on what Avowed will be like. Sponger, a ResetERA member with a history of credible leaks, revealed:

[Avowed is] fully open world, much much larger than Skyrim (very differently “larger”, more proper word would be “denser” and “more contrasted” at the same time).

The user claimed that Avowed will have various different fractions, though “very different” to those found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. There will also be companions, advanced character creation, and it could all be available by 2022/2023.

Why Obsidian and Bethesda Fell Out

If true, these features could serve as just deserts for The Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda, which had a famous falling out with Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas, published by Bethesda, and was due to get a large bonus payout for a positive critical response to the game.

A tweet by writer Chris Avellone revealed that Obsidian missed out on this bonus when Fallout: New Vegas got a Metascore (average review score on Metacritic) of 84, though it needed 85+ for the payout. This meant that despite the game being regarded as one of the best RPGs to be released and making more than $300 million, Obsidian hasn’t received royalties on it.

Obsidian could potentially take that irony further, by releasing Avowed before The Elder Scrolls 6, or if its game becomes a success. Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018 but has said that it won’t be released for quite some time.

If Avowed is released ahead of the next Elder Scrolls game, it could give fantasy RPG fans a reason to completely ignore Bethesda’s title.
